NY Mag just published this insulting article about people self-diagnosing and using Asperger’s as a colloquial term to describe socially awkward people:
And now I’m so pissed off. If you tell people that you “probably have Asperger’s” because you suck at parties or call someone “Asperger’s-y” because they’re socially awkward, you negate and belittle the experience of actually living with an ASD. Life with an ASD isn’t like Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory or some other “socially awkward” TV character. It’s hard, and it’s not an excuse. So don’t you dare use it to refer to yourself in some casual manner.
Sorry, rant over, I was just quite insulted, to say the least.
